Yesterday I had a good friend cut my hair for engagement photos and the wedding. I call her Mrs. Mom (she is practically my second mom). Our families are good friends and will once in a while go camping together. She is a professional hair cutter (or whatever they are called, stylist maybe), and as she was cutting my hair she gave me some very good advice. This is basically what she said:
When you are planning your wedding hair, think of your favorite way to do your hair on a normal day and make it a little fancier. Don't try something brand new that you've never done before (and probably would never do again). Make sure the style of your hair looks good on you and is fitting for you. If someone saw you with that hairstyle would they immediately think you were you? Also, once you decide on a style, practice practice practice! Make sure you know how to make it turn out right.
I loved this piece of advice! I had never really thought about it before. I remember looking back at my Prom pictures and thinking to myself, "Why did I do my hair like that? That looks ridiculous on me!" The style wasn't bad, but it wasn't me. It makes sense to just fancy up a style you absolutely love wearing and that you think you look good in. Now I've just got to figure out how to fancy up my normal, straight hair (I hardly do anything with my hair except straighten it, and I like it that way).
One other thing I was thinking about as I was talking to Mrs. Mom, is unless you are having your hair styled by a professional who is used to modern styles, it is probably a good idea to find someone your own age to do your hair. Not that older generations aren't capable of doing your hair well, but they may not be used to doing modern styles and it might be hard to get the same look that you want. However, this really wouldn't be a problem if you practice a lot. :)
